Awards & Research Grants

Distinguished Scholar Award and Distinguished Personality Award

  • Nominees in the two categories do not have to be members of the LSA
  • Prospective awardees in the “Distinguished Scholar” category must be a senior academic who has “published research articles or/and academic books/monographs that helped shape new directions in Lagos, Nigerian, and African studies.” Recipients of the “Distinguished Personality Award” must be a non-academic practitioner who has made “positive, visible, and major contributions to Lagos politics, society, or economy.”
  • Nomination should include a comprehensive Curriculum Vitae of the nominees and a 1000- word narrative clearly explaining why the recipients deserve the award. The narrative could be a citation to be read publicly during the formal presentation of the awards
  • Both members and non-members of the LSA can submit nominations in the two categories
  • The two awards come with a beautiful plaque, a thunderous clap, and a standing ovation!
  • The award will be officially presented to the winner at the 3rd Lagos conference, June 21-23, 2018
  • Deadline: March 1, 2018

 

Best Doctoral Thesis in Lagos Studies Award

  • Open to a doctoral thesis on Lagos completed in any university in the world. Degree must be awarded in 2017
  • Nomination must include a 1000-word narrative on the significant contribution of the thesis to Lagos studies. It must also highlight methodological and theoretical innovation or uniqueness
  • The award will be officially presented to the winner at the 3rd Lagos conference, June 21-23, 2018
  • The award comes with a plaque and N50,000 ($150.00)
  • The LSA would guide the recipient of this award in revising her or his thesis into a publishable book or/and journal manuscripts

  • Nominees must be dues-paying member of the LSA
  • Deadline: March 1, 2018

 

Best Graduate Student Paper Presented at the Annual Lagos Conference Award

  • This award goes to the best paper presented at the annual Lagos conference by a graduate/postgraduate student registered in any university in the world
  • The award comes with a plaque and N50,000 ($150.00)
  • The award will be officially presented at the 3rd Annual Lagos conference in summer 2018
  • Full paper presented at the 2017 Lagos Conference should be sent to: lagosstudiesassociation@gmail.com
  • The LSA would guide the recipient of this award in revising her or his paper into a publishable journal manuscript
  • Nominees must be member of the LSA
  • Self-nomination is allowed
  • Deadline: July 15, 2017

Pre-doctoral Research Grant

  • The LSA will award up to six research grants (worth N50,000 each) to PhD students working on Lagos
  • Applicants must be registered in a PhD program in any university in the world
  • Applications should include a letter of recommendation from applicants’ supervisor. The letter must highlight the progress the candidate is making and the significant contribution of her or his research to Lagos studies
  • A curriculum vitae and a summarized copy of the PhD proposal (5000 words) must be provided
  • All application materials, including letter of recommendation, should be sent in one folder as electronic mail to lagosstudiesassociation@gmail.com
  • Applicants must be dues-paying member of the LSA
  • Deadline: March 1, 2018

 

Post-doctoral Research Grant

  • The LSA will award up to six post-doctoral research grants (N50,000 each) to scholars working on Lagos and affiliated with academic and research institutions across the world
  • The research grant is open to holders of terminal degrees (example PhD). Terminal degree must have been received after January 1, 2011
  • Applicants must submit a 3000-word research proposal highlighting the significance of their research, methodological innovation, and how they intend to carry out the work
  • A Curriculum Vitae
  • Application should include two letters of recommendation
  • All application materials, including the letters of recommendation, should be sent in one folder as electronic mail to lagosstudiesassociation@gmail.com
  • Applicants must be dues-paying member of the LSA
  • Deadline: March 1, 2018
